This paper discusses the methodological foundations of the concept of mass. Based on an analysis of materials, including well-known and popular physics courses and the primary source – the Fundamentals of Natural Philosophy – the concept of mass as a measure of inertia is shown to have priority over mass as a measure of inertia. This choice is supported by an en-tropy assessment of the content of the concept of mass as both a measure of inertia and a measure of inertia. For this purpose, the content of both concepts was modeled using an information model of intradisciplinary connections (according to T. N. Gnitetskaya). It is shown that the entropy of mass as a measure of inertia is higher. This justifies the use of only one concept – mass as a measure of inertia – in Russian school and university physics courses.
