The focus of the article is assessing the ethnic economy as a promising direction for the development of regional economies. The development of ethnic economies can become a "point of growth", can strengthen the competitive potential of the region, can reduce unemployment, etc. However, the attitude towards ethnic economies is ambiguous. Some researchers consider it from the point of view of subsistence farming, small-scale activities, and a narrow focus, while others see the potential for adaptability to new conditions. The main question posed in the article is what prevents the development of ethnoeconomical activities in contemporary conditions. The article is based on research materials in Khakassia. The empirical basis was the data of a sociological survey of the main ethnic groups of the region: Russians, Khakass people and Shors (n=566) in 2023, as well as data from an expert survey (n=10) in 2024. On the one hand, the republic has favorable geographical conditions for the development of traditional economic activities of the titular ethnic group (Khakass people). There is reserve for agricultural increase production. On the other hand, there are factors that hinder the deployment of agricultural activities, in particular, enterprises of the extractive industry. The economic activity of migrants from neighboring countries affects the economic practices of the population, affecting the ecology of the area of settlement of indigenous population. Despite various measures of support from the regional authorities, their economic effect of them is difficult to assess, and the attitude towards such measures is also ambiguous. It is concluded that the need to preserve the ethno-economic activities of local ethnic groups is due not only to economic considerations, but also to the importance of preserving ethnic groups, their culture, traditions, etc.
